HISTORICAL TOWNS IN SOUTH MARCHE

Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno, which many call a “volume of art history to consult in the open air”, is no doubt a display of extraordinary wealth of monuments and styles dating back to different eras. However, Ascoli is also the “town of the hundred towers” and white travertine. This material embellishes the central Piazza del Popolo, an open-air lounge in the historical downtown, which also hosts several jewels of local culture, such as the Ventidio Basso Theatre, the Municipal Art Gallery and the Cathedral. The Cathedral in particular is not to be missed for it features artworks by Carlo Crivelli.The local gastronomy specialties and pride of the wine and food industry in the Marche region are Ascoli’s stuffed olives and the “vincisgrassi”, treats that one must absolutely taste.

Wine Tour in Offida
DURATION: HALF DAY

Walking along the trails that witnessed the birth of the Marche region’s noble wines, one can reachOffida, a picturesque medieval village surrounded by perfectly preserved town walls, dating back to the twelfth century. Among the numerous cultural landmarks of the town, there is certainly theSerpente Aureo Theatre, a true jewel of the Baroque era, housed in the Town Hall. Offida is surrounded by vineyards and here people can enjoy Rosso Piceno Superiore and Offida wines, the youngest DOC wines in the area.

Other places of interest:
- The ancient centre or “high village”, of San Benedetto
del Tronto, just a short distance from the sea.
- Half day visiting the “Piceno lookouts”.
